Designs Analysis

Mr. Douglas has extensive knowledge of threading insert geometry and CNC lathe programming. He introduced the first Sandvik die press inserts to the Hughes Tool Co. in 1973 and has spent 44 years threading, trouble shooting, reverse engineering, torque testing, and evaluating taper connection designs. He was instrumental in getting pitch diameter measurement added to Spec 5B and addressing the standoff errors caused by ovality. Today the MRP pitch diameter gage SHALL be used prior to using ring and plug gages. He has designed most of the instruments used today for API. Mud Motor and Premium Threaded connections. His experiences have allowed him to evaluate and create new designs required for high bend radii and torque applications. He has designed lathe, mill and welding fixtures for oil field related products. His new pitch diameter system (JSS) for shouldered connections is revolutionizing the Mud Motor industry today allowing new connection designs to be tested and implemented. In addition to his contributions to thread inspection and OCTG tubular metrology, Mr. Douglas also authored software and developed calculations for use in thread design and inspection methodology. With over four decades of experience, Mr. Douglas is the industry authority on the criticality of threaded connection designs.

Mr. Smith has designed and developed drill strings using double shoulder tool joints. He designed the first 5-1/2” drill string that could be used in drilling 8-1/2” holes. He has designed a number of other specialized drill pipe assemblies such as titanium drill pipe for short radius
drilling, short radius expendable drill pipe, large diameter (5-7/8”) titanium drill pipe and drill pipe for under-balance drilling. He has designed drill pipe that conveys electric power and telemetry. He has designed tools to resurface tool joint sealing surfaces in pipe yards.

He has designed truck mounted auger drilling machines for the construction and utility industries. Designed truck mounted auger drilling machine for Trans Alaska Pipeline for operation in -40 deg F weather. Included design for metallurgy and heating of fluids such as hydraulic oil, gear oil and engine oil.

He has designed big hole drilling tools and hole cleaning systems for the mining and construction industries. Designed power train for mine raise drill.

He has designed and conducted many full-scale tests on drilling tools and other downhole tools relating to internal and external pressure, mechanical loads, and fatigue. Tests included designing special fixturing, instrumentation, monitoring systems and analysis of failures.
